Kinesiology: One word, several meanings
In its purist sense, the term “kinesiology” means “the scientific study of human movement.” However, the traditional and alternative healthcare worlds use the term “kinesiology” quite differently and this has lent to no small amount of confusion when trying to describe what I do.
The term “kinesiology” is used in three main ways:
1. Structural Kinesiology
This is the traditional use of the term. It is most commonly associated with addressing imbalances in posture, joint alignment and muscle function.
Some of its sub-specialties include: Biomechanics, exercise physiology, sports medicine, motor development, and motor control.
Professions that use structural kinesiology include: physical therapists, athletic trainers, and exercise physiologists
2. Applied Kinesiology (AK)
Applied Kinesiology is an alternative healthcare modality that combines the principles of chiropractic, nutrition, and traditional Chinese medicine to assess and improve an individual’s overall health. It uses muscle testing and clinical observations as to identify imbalances in the body and determine appropriate treatment approaches.
AK can be used to identify foot sensitivities and nutritional needs, support the body’s meridians, and address structural and emotional imbalances.
Applied kinesiology involves a certification process by the International College of Applied Kinesiology and is only open to diagnosing physicians, including chiropractors, osteopaths, as well as some doctors and dentists,
3. Bioenergetic Kinesiology (BK)
Bioenergetic Kinesiology is another type of kinesiology in the alternative medicine realm. It may also be known by similar terms including: specialized kinesiology, energy kinesiology, and neuroenergetic kinesiology.
BK developed out of AK. As AK continued to develop, it was found that there are many concepts and techniques, once simplified, could be useful and practical for the general public.
Touch for Health was the first modality that was created, and was designed as a non-drug approach to be performed by the lay person to help their families and communities.
As in AK, Bioenergetic Kinesiology modalities to use muscle testing and the mind-body connection as the foundation of practice. However, methods of correction do not require quite the same level of precision as AK. Corrections used in BK widely vary and may include: acupressure, coaching, energy balancing, sensory stimulation (such as smell, sound or light), body work techniques, cognitive tasks or emotional provocations.
Specific BK modalities include: Touch for Health, SIPS, Crossinology Brain Integration, LEAP, and others.
As a physical therapist I use the term in the structural and biomechanical sense. However, as a Brain Integration practitioner I use it in the bioenergetic and alternative medicine sense. How I explain to people what I do, depends on my audience!
